BHUBANESWAR: Participation of students in a ‘City Walk’ organised by Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on the occasion of Local Self Government Day celebration has run into a controversy with a social activist approaching Child Welfare Committee, Khurda, and State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) to take appropriate action against authorities. One social activist Binod Sahu submitted that the BMC had proposed to engage school children in the walk to celebrate the day. "The students were made to walk from BMC office to Exhibition Ground, which violated the human rights guidelines. Students are only allowed to participate in national day celebration," Mr. Sahu said. Reacting to the criticism, BMC Commissioner Aparajita Sarangi told a private television channel that, "we had invited cadets of NCC only, but students of other schools took part in the rally on their own." The CWC Chairperson R. S Mishra said the body could not act on the complaint as it was submitted late on Thursday. "I tried to contact both the commissioner and the deputy commissioner but nobody was available." Meanwhile, Biswapriya Kanungo, another human rights activist, demanded that the SHRC should take note of the violation of guidelines and send a reminder to State government on the issue.
