HYDERABAD: Some rare stamp collections, including those preserved at the National Philatelic Museum, will be on display at the 11th Andhra Pradesh State Philatelic Exhibition (APPEX-2007) from October 31 to November 2 at Visakhapatnam. In all, 500 frames will be exhibited -- 50 in the invitee category and the rest in the competition section -- during the event. Announcing the details at a press conference here on Friday, Chief Postmaster-General (AP Circle) Yesodhara Menon said stamps --which were safeguarded by the Army Postal Service, India Security Press, Nasik, and Security Printing Press, Hyderabad -- would also be on show. The main objective was to promote the hobby of stamp collection among different sections, particularly youth and children. During the event, four special covers – on Star Tortoises (Srikakulam), Koya Dance (East Godavari), Ranarang Chowk (Tenali) and Jain Temple (Kolanpak) would be released. A philately workshop, a seminar, a quiz and essay writing competitions for schoolchildren would also be held. Teams which qualify at the district and regional levels would participate in the competition, she said. All types of philatelic items -- stamps, albums, miniature sheets, first day covers and brochures -- would be available at philatelic booths to be set up at the venue, Seetharama Kalyana Mandapam, Saligramapuram. Special audio-visual presentations on philately would also be held. Ms. Menon said the AP circle was leading in the country in business development. Five common service centres for processing passport applications were functioning. Such centres would be opened at Kavali and Rajahmundry. Earlier, she unveiled the logo and mascot for the exhibition.
