NEW PARTY: R. Sarath Kumar addressing the gathering after launching his party Akila Indhiya Samthuva Makkal Katchi in Chennai on Friday.
CHENNAI: Actor Sarath Kumar launched his political party here on Friday with a vow to cleanse politics and involve people in the administration. The new party—Akila Indhiya Samthuva Makkal Katchi (AISMK)—will try to bring back the Kamaraj rule in the State, which was, according to Mr. Sarath Kumar, the best ever so far in the State. The late Congress leader was able to provide a corrupt-free government, guided only by the interest of the people. The new party would strive to bring back such a rule in the State, Mr. Sarath Kumar told newsmen here. Mr. Sarath Kumar, who is also the president of the party, said there had been disillusionment among people, especially among youth. If political parties failed to guide them properly, there was every possibility for them to go astray. His party would try to mould them properly and make them participate in the political administration. He claimed that there was a political vacuum in the State and the party wanted to fill it. When newsmen pointed out that president of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) Vijaykanth also said that his party would be an alternative to the DMK and the AIADMK, Mr. Sarath Kumar said the vacuum was big enough to accommodate other political parties. Asked about policies and programmes, Mr. Sarath Kumar said the first State conference of the party would be held in Madurai in December. During the intervening period, the party leaders would interact with people, especially youth and intellectuals and frame its guidelines based on the interaction. His party’s long-term objective would be to make cent per cent franchise. The party would put thrust on schemes that would improve the socio-economic lot of the people. He was of the opinion that there was no need for freebies if the economic condition of the people improved. The party’s flag would be red and yellow with a star in the corner. The red signified revolution and labour and yellow auspiciousness. And the star symbolised Sun which radiates light throughout the world. The party received greetings from Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, Union Minister of State G.K.Vasan, BJP leader S. Tirunavukkarasar and Thol Thirumavalavan, he added.
