Forensic experts examine Tali Mahadeva Temple

Police keep tight vigil in the area

Hartal observed in Perinthalmanna and Angadipuram areas

PERINTHALMANNA: The front door of Tali Mahadeva Temple at Angadipuram near here was found burnt in the wee hours of Friday. Smell of kerosene and burnt remains of a plastic container found from the site raised the suspicion of arson.

The police acted quickly by deploying a heavy force at Angadipuram. Forensic experts led by R. Rahila examined the site.

Activists of the Hindu Aikya Vedi staged a protest in front of the temple.

A hartal was also observed in Perinthalmanna and Angadipuram areas. Vedi leader Kummanam Rajasekharan addressed a gathering in the evening.

The police said the fire was noticed by autorickshaw drivers around 3.30 a.m. They alerted the temple security guards, who rang the temple bell waking up the entire neighbourhood.

The left portion of the teakwood door on the entrance of the temple compound was found burnt when fire force reached the spot.

The door contained the engravings of Nataraja, Dakshinamoorthy, Ganapati and Nandi.

Apart from two Dy.SPs, four Circle Inspectors, 15 Sub-Inspectors and more than 100 constables were posted near the temple. Twelve mobile units of the police patrolled the area.

Forensic experts suspected the use of petrol for burning the door. However, they refused to confirm, as the smell of petrol, kerosene and diesel would be alike after burning.

All-party meeting

An all-party meeting was convened soon after the incident. The meeting exhorted the people not to let anyone exploit the situation.
