KOLAR: A police officer was injured in stone throwing while police lobbed teargas shells to disperse a mob indulging in violence here on Friday. Violence erupted when police refused to release some persons arrested in connection with a freak accident and assault on a police constable earlier in the day. Some youths reportedly assaulted Manjunath, a police personnel on enquiring them about rash driving which resulted in the accident at Doddapet area. The police took them into custody. On knowing this, scores of people belonging to a particular community gathered near Town police station demanding the release of the arrested. As police did not agree to release the arrested, the mob moved towards Clock Tower area and resorted to road blockade and stone-throwing. Rural sub inspector Satyanarayana Rao Kudur was injured in the stone-throwing. Both Manjunath and Kudur were treated at the district Sri Narasimha Raja Hospital. The police lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the mob. In the meantime, some people led by Bajarang Dal staged a dharna near the KSRTC bus stand. Shops closed
As the news of violence spread, shops downed their shutters in different localities of the city. Cases were registered against Munavar Pasha, Mujamin and Wahid in connection with assault on police personnel, police said. The situation, though tense, is under control, Superintendent of Police B. Dayanand said.
