Bangalore: The State Government will open an accident emergency unit on the premises of the Vani Vilas Hospital shortly, Minister for Health and Family Welfare R. Ashok said here on Friday. Speaking at the inauguration of an Obstetrics and Gynaecology Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Vani Vilas Hospital, Mr. Ashok said: “We plan to start a 50-bed ICU at the hospital, of which 20 beds will be dedicated to accident emergency patients while the rest will be for gynaecological emergencies.” The project cost was Rs. 42 crore and the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited had decided to give Rs. 4 crore for it, while the rest would be funded by the Government, he added. Labour ICU
To bring down maternal mortality, a two-bed Obstetrics and Gynaecology Intensive Care (ICU) unit in the labour ward was inaugurated on the occasion. Mr. Ashok said the ICU had one ventilator and monitors which would help in dealing emergency complications after labour. Mr. Ashok said that recruitment of doctors for all the district hospital was on and 150 had been recruited while another 150 would be recruited shortly. Now parents of children born in Vani Vilas Hospital do not have to be at the mercy of the ayahs and ward boys to get a glimpse of their newborn nor do they have to fret about the child’s well-being. The hospital has launched a new information display system where an LCD screen outside the labour room will display the photograph, weight and sex of the baby a few minutes after the baby is born. Launching this facility on Friday, Minister for Medical Education V.S. Acharya said to prevent corruption among the lower grade hospital staff and harassment of parents this facility had been launched. A running digital display board giving information about the hospital to patients would also be put up shortly, Dr. Acharya added. He said that the State Government proposed to upgrade all government hospitals to the standard of corporate hospitals within two years. Nursing education
Dr. Acharya said that Cabinet sub-committee had given the green signal for the nursing education policy and it was already in place. “We have set up a task force which will examine applications for new colleges and inspect the infrastructure and faculty in the colleges. Based on their recommendations only we will give permission for new colleges,” he added.
