PILED HIGH: The entrance to the Government Kasturba Gandhi Hospital resembles a garbage dump.

Chennai: The Chennai Corporation’s contract with Neel Metal Fanalca for privatised garbage clearance in three zones in the city could be cancelled if the firm failed to show results.

According to the contract’s terms, the Corporation can call off the agreement if the company fails to meet requirements within three months. As the firm has been able to meet only 20 per cent of the targeted garbage clearance service, the Corporation will keep a close watch on its performance, said officials.

For the second consecutive day, Neel Metal Fanalca was served with ‘show-cause’ notices from the Corporation on Thursday. Heaps of garbage rotted on street corners in several parts of Ice House, Kodambakkam and Adyar zones. Entry to several narrow streets off Ellis Road in Triplicane was blocked by decaying wastes and plastic litter.

The Chennai Corporation’s employees continue to clear garbage in Pulianthope zone though it is included in the contract with Neel Metal Fanalca.

Mayor M. Subramanian said the firm did not have enough manpower and material for even three zones. Hence, the handing over of Pulianthope zone’s garbage clearance would be made only if the firm showed its competency in the other three zones.

The Mayor supervised garbage clearance in Vadapalani (Kodambakkam zone) on Thursday morning. CES Onyx, the firm that had earlier handled privatised garbage clearance, assisted in removal of garbage in Adyar and Kodambakkam zones. In Ice House zone, employees of the Corporation and Neel Metal Fanalca worked together to clear the backlog.

Clearance methods

Neel Metal Fanalca representatives said they would get back on track by the second week of September.

Garbage compactor trucks would also be pressed into service in two weeks. At present, 160 mini-trucks are used to take the garbage to transfer stations. The lack of designated points or bins to collect garbage has forced residents to dump garbage on footpaths and public spaces.
