THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The plastic ban will come into force in the State from Saturday, Local Self-Government Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty has said. Mr. Kutty said in a release here on Friday that stringent action would be taken against those violating the law. Fine
The Government would levy a fine from individuals and cancel the licence of traders for violating the ban. Plastic goods would be seized and a nominal fine levied from traders in the initial phase. On detecting repeated instances of violating the ban, the fine would be increased to Rs.5,000 and subsequently to Rs.10,000. Packing of food and beverages in plastic containers and bottles is a major health hazard and also increases the volume of refuse. Explore alternatives
Hoteliers and caterers should explore other alternatives, he said. Those organising processions and festivals should try to avoid plastic festoons, cups and flex boards. Campuses of educational institutions, streets, trade centres, marriage halls, hospitals and housing colonies should be made garbage-free zones. Garbage-free
The Government would go ahead with the follow-up steps to turn Kerala into a garbage-free State, he said.
