Corrections and clarifications

  • The third paragraph in a report “I am ready for space voyage again: Rakesh Sharma” (Tamil Nadu, August 31, 2007, page 8) was: “Neil Armstrong did it for the second time at the age of 77. I am younger than h im and also have both fitness and experience in undertaking space mission.” The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) clarifies that it was not Neil Armstrong but John Glenn (b. July 18, 1921). On October 29, 1998, John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, made history again. He became the oldest man to fly in space by serving as a payload specialist on STS-95 aboard the space shuttle Discovery. Glenn spent most of his time in space participating in investigations on the aging process. His experiments were designed to test how his body responded to the microgravity environment. They looked at balance, perception, immune system response, bone and muscle density, metabolism, blood flow and sleep.

  • A pointer in the infobox accompanying a report “Government scraps pact with NICE” (Karnataka, August 31, 2007, page 1) was: “The original framework agreement was signed between the J.H. Patel Government and NICE in April 2007”. It should have been April 1997.

  • Donald Thomas (Bahamas) won the men’s high jump clearing 2.35 metres, as mentioned in the results column, and not 2.25 metres as given in the text of a report “Lagat upsets Ramzi to win 1500m title” (“Sport”, August 30, 2007)
