10-year RI for Shahbuddin
Special Correspondent
PATNA: A special court on Friday awarded 10-year rigorous imprisonment to Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Mohammed Shahbuddin and his two police bodyguards for making a murderous attack on the then Siwan Superintendent of Police P S.K. Singhal and his police party 11 years ago.
Additional District Judge G.P. Shrivastava, who conducted the proceedings inside the Siwan jail, on Thursday pronounced Shahbuddin, Jehangir Khan and Mohammed Khalid guilty of attempt to murder, and obstructing officials from discharging their duties, besides under the Arms Act.
The sentences would run concurrently. They would have to pay a penalty of Rs. 2,000 each, failing which they would serve an additional term of six months.
Both police personnel fired from their service weapons at the police party, which attempted to nab a fleeing group of criminals on May 3, 1996.
The three did not refute the charges, nor did they present any witness in their defence.
