PUDUKOTTAI: At a time when two-wheeler riders remain reluctant to follow the rule on helmet use, a group of students enacted a play recently on the advantages of the safety headgear at Gandarvakottai, about 40 km from here.
The play was staged as part of the cultural programmes organised at a function organised by the Police Department and Bharathi Narpani Mandram to mark the inauguration of the Friends of Police movement.
Students of the Nila Catering Institute at Gandarvakottai grabbed the opportunity to create awareness among the masses and to sensitise them to the danger in defying the rule.
The play, staged by nine students, centred around a helmet-user E. Tirunavukkarasu and a helmetless rider Krishnamoorthy, both involved in a collision.
While the former escapes unhurt, the latter succumbs to injuries at a hospital despite quick medical attention.
“We chose the theme as Gandarvakottai and surrounding areas are prone to accidents involving two-wheeler riders who succumb to head injuries,” says the Director of Nila Educational Trust, A. Sahadevan, who is also the Commandant of the FoP, Gandarvakottai. He recalled a road accident at Mattangaal village near Gandarvakottai last month in which a father and son succumbed to head injuries after being run over by a heavy vehicle.
Bharathi Narpani Mandram secretary M. Ganesan said that the onus of safety rested on the road-users.
