The line-up: NSUI candidates for DUSU polls (from left) Devraj Tehlan, Amrita, Khushboo Sharma and Manish Choudhary in Delhi on Friday.
NEW DELHI: Refusing to be drawn into any controversy over fresh scrutiny of eligible candidates conducted by the authorities on orders of the High Court for the Delhi University Students’ Union polls, the National Students’ Union of India on Friday introduced its panel to the media at a press conference. “The 2007 elections are being held in a very different atmosphere under the eyes of the Supreme Court and the High Court. We want to promote candidates who have a good academic background and can highlight genuine issues. We are certain of a historic mandate in these elections on the basis our work at the level of both the organisation and also the Delhi University Students’ Union,” said NSUI president Nadeem Javed. Asked why his organisation has so far not commented on the High Court order that has disqualified many candidates of other students’ outfits even as the other organisations have openly protested against this decision, Nadeem said: “We too have lost one candidate because of that and another person was asked to step in. But this matter involves the High Court and Supreme Court, how can we comment on it?” The NSUI candidates for this year are: Amrita (president), Devraj Tehlan (vice-president), Manish Choudhary (secretary) and Khushboo Sharma (joint secretary). Asked why the NSUI had been fielding a woman presidential candidate for the past three consecutive years, Nadeem argued that it was not glamour but their work in their respective colleges and organisation that had earned these candidates their election tickets. “We need candidates who can, apart from addressing other problems, protect the academic interests of the University. Those who can bridge the gap between Shri Ram College of Commerce and Swami Shraddhanand College. Only the NSUI presidential candidate was not disqualified after the new list, while those from other organisations were rejected,” said Amrita. The NSUI president also rubbished allegations that the DUSU office-bearers did not fulfil their responsibilities as students’ representatives fully during this term as midway they contested the elections to the MCD on a Congress ticket. “A majority of our population comprises the youth. We believe that young candidates should participate in the MCD elections. The party fielded them because they have a certain acceptance and identity among the youth,” justified Nadeem.
