The mounds of garbage near Sir Ramaswami Mudaliar Higher Secondary School in the area have been a perennial problem
CHENNAI: The Ambattur police on Friday assisted the municipality in clearing the garbage pile on the stretch of Chennai Tiruvallur High Road near Thiruvengadam Nagar junction. The Ambattur Municipality cleared about six lorryloads of garbage from the area with the assistance of the police. The mounds of garbage near the Sir Ramaswami Mudaliar Higher Secondary School in the area have been a perennial problem for the residents for long. According to a municipality official, the waste generated by anti-socials who used a thatched hut located close by compounded the garbage pile. The Ambattur police on Friday removed the hut that encroached the road space and volunteered to assist in the garbage clearance . Following public complaints, the municipality over the past few days had intensified its conservancy operations. A Municipality official said about 150 loads of garbage was cleared over the last two days and taken to the Athipattu dumping yard. He cited lack of space at the dumping yard as the cause for the garbage accumulating in the residential areas. At the dumping yard, garbage stacks were 25 feet high. “We have cleared the way for the vehicles to dispose the waste inside the dumping yard and this arrangement will continue till January,” the official said. The local body is waiting to acquire around 40 acres earmarked in Kuthambakkam for constructing compost yard.
