NEW DELHI: A day after the sting operation by a television news channel triggered large-scale violence at Asaf Ali Road, the Delhi police on Friday arrested the mathematics teacher of the Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya on charges of immoral trafficking.

She was produced in a local court that sent her to two days’ police custody. The sting operation had shown the teacher Uma Khurana allegedly forcing a girl student into prostitution. The government on Thursday suspended Uma and initiated an enquiry.

Following the violence that left some two dozen persons injured and a score of vehicles damaged, extra policemen were deployed on Friday to prevent untoward incidents. “We have requested the residents and local politicians to maintain calm,” said a police officer. He said Uma was being interrogated to find out if more persons were involved in the racket. In the morning, the police conducted searches at Uma’s Yojna Vihar house in the trans-Yamuna area.

They have also sought original compact disc of the programme broadcast by the television channel. Late on Thursday night, the police registered a case of immoral trafficking against Uma on the basis of the sting operation. They have not received any formal complaint against her from anyone so far. The police said Uma was living separately from her husband and has two children.

After the sting operation was broadcast on Thursday morning, angry parents and locals went on the rampage forcing their way into the school and manhandled the teacher, tearing her clothes. The protesters hurled stones at the police and damaged three of their vehicles setting one of them on fire.

Eighteen persons were arrested on Thursday for indulging in violence. More arrests are likely.
