As Bangalore Rural district was unwieldy, policing had suffered, writes K.V. Subramanya
With the State Government carving out the new Ramanagara district by splitting the vast Bangalore Rural district, policing is likely to improve in these areas. As Bangalore Rural district was unwieldy and policing had suffered in the district, a proposal was made to the Government, some 15 years ago, to bifurcate it and create a separate police district headed by a Superintendent of Police (SP). Successive governments had deferred a decision on it. Though the Home Department cleared the long pending proposal in November 2003, the State Cabinet had not given the green signal. With the bifurcation of Bangalore Rural district, the plan to create a separate police district has become redundant as Ramanagara will have a separate police force headed by an SP. However, the State Government is yet to post an SP to Ramanagara district and also set up a district control room. Ramanagara, Channapatna, Kanakapura and Magadi taluks are part of the new district. According to some senior police officers, the bifurcation was necessary as Bangalore Rural district was not only too vast for one SP to supervise, but also each of the taluks had its unique set of law and order problems. Problems
Of late, several major industries have come up in the district. Apart from the law and order problems related to industrialisation, the Bangalore Rural district police are also facing problems from a large number of resorts and clubs that have come up on the outskirts of the city. Many of these clubs have allegedly become centres for nefarious activities such as flesh trade and drug abuse. A look at the composition of the Bangalore district reveals that each of them has area-specific problems. Labour unrest, strikes and crime resulting out of industrialisation have been the major issues the police in the industrial belt of Hoskote, Anekal and Attibele have been dealing with. Further, the burden on the Bangalore Rural district police would increase in the days to come as the Devanahalli international airport is scheduled to start operations from April next. With the creation of Ramanagara district, work load on the Bangalore Rural district SP will come down and he can concentrate on the airport security and related issues, an officer said.
