Constant patrolling on city roads helped curb crimes, writes Anand Haridas
Intensified patrolling during the nine-day night shopping has yielded results for the police, as no case of pick-pocketing or chain-snatching was reported during these days. The presence of police in the city strengthens between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. and with people busy shopping at night, the work of the police personnel had eased, said Manoj Abraham, City Police Commissioner. “Before Onam, we had programmes like Night Blaster meant for residential areas,” he said. During night shopping, the police concentrated on commercial areas with the coordination of private security personnel, Mr. Abraham said. The City Police had earlier held meetings with representatives of the merchant community and private security personnel. The merchants were asked to do security audits of their shops and improve security mechanisms. Similarly, information flow between police personnel on night patrol and private security personnel was improved. “The private security personnel on duty were checked by the night patrol units and asked to be on the look-out for criminal activities in the immediate neighbourhood of the building they were deployed at. Earlier, they used to restrict their surveillance to the building,” Mr. Abraham said. During night shopping, policing was strengthened to check petty crimes. “Constant patrolling on the main roads such as M.G. Road and Chittoor Road was ensured by mobilising the motorbike patrol units in the circle,” said G. Venu, Circle Inspector, Ernakulam Town Central. The patrolling was extended to the exit points of the city. “Flying Squads and Highway Patrol units were on alert. Regular patrols were increased during these hours,” said M. Ramesh Kumar, Circle Inspector, Ernakulam Town North. He said that the special monsoon drive that began well ahead of Onam was instrumental in managing the festival season effectively. “During the past 45 days, nearly 30 theft cases were detected,” he said. The police said no major traffic issues were reported during night shopping.
