TAMBARAM: A couple of candidates contesting for the post of Perumbakkam panchayat have appealed to the State Election Commission and the police to ensure free and fair byelections scheduled for September 5.
Suhasini Rangarajan and M. Sivasankar, two of the candidates, on Thursday said that dozens of youth hired from places outside Perumbakkam, were demonstrating their show of strength.
These youth were canvassing for their rival candidates and this was aimed at intimidating them, Ms. Suhasini charged. As the last date of campaigning, September 3, was fast approaching, this group was only stepping up its pressure. While it was entirely democratic for candidates to resort to intense campaign, hiring youth and men from other places was unfair.
She said she had informed personnel at Pallikaranai police station regarding this. Policemen said elections for the post of president of this village panchayat were being intensely contested as its previous incumbent, R. Saraswathy, was elected unopposed.
The village and booths were categorised as ‘sensitive,’ officers said, adding that protection would be ensured for all seven candidates in the fray for the post of panchayat president.
