Plagiarism charge: court calls for records

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Friday directed the State Government to procure and place before it records with the Chancellor of Bangalore University relating to the inquiry report against charges of plagiarism levelled against a professor.
The court was dealing with an appeal by M. Venkataramanappa who had challenged a single judge order upholding the action of the Governor (in his capacity as Chancellor) in ordering an inquiry into charges of plagiarism levelled against him for his doctoral thesis.
Mr. Venkataramanappa said he was awarded a doctorate in 2002 for his work on “Small farmers in Karnataka — a sociological study.” However, there was a complaint that that the thesis was plagiarised.
On February 13, 2003, the university referred the thesis to the Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC), Bangalore, for its opinion.The institute sent its o inion to the university, which then constituted a three-member commission of experts to look into the issue. The committee, he said, had rejected the charge of plagiarism.
