TIRUPUR: Nallur Municipality, which shares its eastern border with Tirupur Municipality, plans to step up provision of drinking water connections.
With the State Government lifting restriction on number of water connections, the local body swung into action to give nearly 4,000 more connections to the waiting applicants.
Municipal Commissioner V. Manickam told ‘The Hindu’ that they had so far provided household water supply connections to 1,780 residents out of 5,888 who had paid Rs. 2 crore deposit in August 2006. “At the time when we collected deposit from residents, we had permission to provide only 2,000 connections. Recently, the Government had lifted the cap and we can give connections to as many number of residents based on the demand,” he said.
Alternate days
Asserting that the local body had adequate water to supply, Mr. Manickam said that they had been supplying drinking water on alternate days. The municipality had laid main water pipes to almost all streets to enable extending water supply to all residents, who had applied for it.
Stating that the road widening work had damaged several main lines, the Municipal Commissioner said that the local body had restored it. The Nallur Municipality had recently resolved to provide water connections to all those who had paid deposit.
“We are going to speed up giving household connections. From Monday onwards the works will be speeded up,” he added. Besides the 120 connections out of 2,000 that had been left out for want of main line, the local body would provide water connections to all at the earliest.
Overhead tank
Mr. Manickam said that the local body had started construction of overhead tank at VGV Garden using the deposit money. On many residents still waiting to pay the deposit, he clarified that fresh applications would be invited after getting the municipal council’s nod and clearing the backlog.
