HYDERABAD: Air Force Station, Hakimpet has been selected to host the ‘Parachuting Competition’ in the forthcoming Military World Games (MWG) scheduled to start from October 14 to 21. The parachuting competition, being held for the first time in the country, will have two disciplines including ‘accuracy’ and ‘formation skydive’, with each team consisting of six members. In all, about 240 athletes including 50 women from 39 different to countries would be participating in this event. “The Air Force Station is fully equipped to host such an event. Already the all important drop-zone, where the jumpers will land, has been prepared,” chairman of Parachuting Championship Organising Committee, Naseem Akhtar, said. Each country would be fielding one team consisting of five competitors (male or female) and one cameraman including one qualified judge, which is mandatory for every team. Accuracy competition involves jumping from a height of 2,500 feet and manoeuvring the parachute to hit a disc having a radius of six centimetres. The diver has to fall within 16 cm of the disc to record any points. The second event, formation skydives, consists of team of four best jumpers jumping from a height of 10,000 feet to perform predefined drills or manoeuvres within 30 seconds. The drills are recorded by the team’s cameraman, which are later on evaluated by a panel of judges.
