SET IN MOTION: Karunanidhi Street, Pudur, is one of the areas where pipeline laying work has been accelerated as part of the underground sewerage project in Ambattur.
CHENNAI: The second phase of the underground sewerage project in Ambattur began on Thursday, a development that is expected to bring relief to the residents on its completion. Besides construction of a sewage pumping station in Korattur at an estimated cost of Rs.2.5 crore, the Ambattur Municipality is set to issue work orders on Friday for a pipeline. This pipeline, which is part of the second phase of the project, will link the sewer network to Koyambedu sewage treatment plant. But, the residents of Ambattur are wondering how the second phase would proceed as per schedule with 50 per cent of the project’s first phase yet to be completed. Many streets have been rendered unmotorable owing to the delay in carrying out the work. Admitting that the project’s first phase was running behind schedule, an Ambattur municipality official said that it was delayed as contractors demanded more than the estimated cost. Though the work was slated for completion by July, several obstacles, including manpower shortage, have delayed it. However, pipeline-laying work in areas such as Rajiv Gandhi Nagar and Kallikuppam was progressing and construction of a sewage pumping station in Teachers’ Colony nearing completion. So far, about 48,000 of the one lakh house connections have been provided. The official said that a meeting would be held to negotiate the project cost with the contractors to speed up the work.
