777 new youth and women SHGs would be formed this financial year
NAGAPATTINAM: Nearly 100 volunteers, including a few women, were given a daylong special training in Mayiladuturai, Kilvelur, Vedaranyam and Tirumarugal blocks till Friday to teach literacy to nearly 2,500 illiterate members of women self-help groups (SHGs), said Tenkasi S. Jawahar, Collector, here on Friday.
He said that the volunteers were trained on teaching methods. According to a survey conducted recently, nearly 2,500 members of women SHGs in the four blocks did not know to read and write and they made an appeal to teach them the skills.
Mr. Jawahar said that within a few months time, the volunteers would teach the illiterates so that they could even deposit and withdraw money from banks. There were 11,265 women SHGs in the district and 777 new youth and women SHGs would be formed this financial year.
Many SHGs had started income-generating units in the district getting good income for the SHGs and also for its members.
The banks have also been instructed to provide revolving fund for them to start more viable business ventures.
