Four-laning work on National Highway gathers steam near Perambalur

Sign of development: Work on construction of a bridge across the Chinnaru near Perambalur in progress as part of four-laning Tiruchi-Chennai National Highway.

PERAMBALUR: With the commencement of several works, including the one on construction of a bridge across the Chinnaru on the outskirts of the town, the four-laning of Ulundurpet - Padalur stretch of the Tiruchi-Chennai National Highway has gained momentum.

A stretch of 92.6 km is being developed on an outlay of Rs.460 crore. The work has been divided into two segments — between Uludurpet and Ezhuthur, and between Ezhuthur and Padalur.

The Chinnaru bridge is one of the four major bridges, the other three being across the Manimuthar, Gomuki and Vellar.

According to official sources, 19 minor bridges, two railway over-bridges at Koothakudi and Ulundurpet bypass, flyovers at Virudhachalam, Perambalur four-roads, and Perambalur three-roads. Underpasses would be constructed at Valikandapuram, Padalur and two other places.

Massive bridge

The bridge across the Chinnaru will be 25 metres wide with seven spans, each with an average height of 12 metres, according to Pramod Kumar, Senior Manager (Administration), IJM (India) Infrastructure Limited, Eraiyur, which is executing the work on the Ezhuthur-Padalur stretch.

According to National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) sources, the work on four-laning of Ulundurpet-Padalur stretch will be completed by November 2008.

Traffic diverted

As part of expeditious execution of the project, traffic on the National Highway has been diverted to a stretch of 3.5 km at Venganur from Thursday, sources said. Similar diversions would be introduced at few other places shortly. Shoulders were being readied for a stretch of 2.5 km at Asanur and Erainji villages. Work on diversion road for a total of 7 km was under progress at Sathanur, Paali and Mavidanthal.
