Panel to ensure total enrolment of children in schools

Special Correspondent

Also to ensure that there have been no child workers

VELLORE: The Block Education Committee (BEC) of the Kaniyambadi panchayat union has decided to ensure enrolment of all children of school-going age (below 14 years) under the Sarva Siksha Abhyan (Education For All).

At its meeting held under V.P.S. Kalaimani, chairman of Kaniyambadi panchayat union and president of the BEC recently, it was decided to ensure total enrolment by getting a declaration from the 74 village education committees in the block that there had been no child of school-going age who did not go to a school.

And there had been no child worker in the concerned villages.

After getting such a declaration, the BEC would declare Kaniyambadi panchayat union as free from child labour and free from non-school going children.

The committee noted that if a child missed the opportunity of education at the school-going age, it would take another 30 years for another child in the same family to get that opportunity.

Self-learning materials

It was also decided that self-learning materials (SLM) would be purchased with the help of donations from local people and distributed to the 64 schools at a function to be held under the District Collector. The meeting decided to request the MLAs of Polur and Anaicut to sanction funds under their Constituency Development Fund for construction of compound walls in schools.

BEC’s request

The BEC requested panchayat presidents and BEC members to visit the schools in the villages, assess their needs and extend required help to implement the activity-based learning (ABL) system effectively.

It was also decided to impart training in the ABL system to the BECmembers and parents in order to enlist their total cooperation.
