“Will take call two days before IAEA meet”

Mumbai: “I will be definitely going to attend the 51st General Meeting of the IAEA in Vienna,” Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar told a select group of reporters here.

“Things are changing every day... but I will be taking the call two days before the General Meeting which starts from September 17,” Dr. Kakodkar said, asked whether he would discuss the safeguards agreement.

His comments assume significance as the Left parties, providing crucial support to the United Progressive Alliance Government, demanded that Dr. Kakodkar should not discuss the safeguards agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency when he goes to Vienna.

The Left parties view such discussions on safeguards agreement as operationalisation of the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal, which they are opposed to.

Dr. Kakodkar admitted that there were “some constraints” related to the talks on the India-specific safeguards agreement with the IAEA and the Nuclear Suppliers Group. Asked whether the Department of Atomic Energy was satisfied with the deal, he said “if we were not satisfied, we would not have agreed to the deal.” — PTI
