NEW DELHI: Impressive performances by light-welterweight Som Bahadur Pun and featherweight A. L. Lakra have earned the Services pugilists a place in the Indian team for the World boxing championship — the first qualifying tournament for the Beijing Olympics. The Selection Committee of the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) has approved only nine boxers for the Chicago World championship, thereby deciding to drop heavyweight and super-heavyweight pugilists from the Olympic plan. The IABF had announced that the winners of the 54th National championship, which concluded here on Thursday, would get automatic berths for the Chicago meet. The Selection Committee, which met here on Thursday evening, decided on the same lines, but cut out the top two weight categories as the performance of the winners was not up to the standards.
The team will begin its conditioning camp in Patiala on September 7. The IABF has also received an invitation from its Kazakh counterpart for a training-cum-competition tour ahead of the Chicago meet. The tour, however, will depend on clearance from the Sports Ministry. Despite the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) deciding to save its boxers for the World Military Games in Hyderabad, the IABF has gone ahead and sent the names of Lakra and Pun to the International Boxing Association AIBA. The team: 48kg: Balbir Singh; 51kg: Jitender Kumar; 54kg: S. Suresh Singh; 57kg: A. L. Lakra; 60kg: Jai Bhagwan; 64kg: Som Bahadur Pun; 69kg: Dilbag Singh; 75kg: Vijender; 81kg: Jasveer.
