A complete sell out

No chemistry: Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman in The Invasion.

The Invasion (English)

Cast: Nicole Kidman,

Daniel Craig

Director: Oliver

Hirschbiegel

One does not know where to begin about all that is wrong with this film. Is it the total lack of chemistry between the lead actors — Nicole Kidman and a woefully underused Daniel Craig? Is it the uneven tone, which wildly oscillates between mindless action thriller, cautionary tale, science fiction parable, creepy horror story and mom and child in peril? The main reason the film crashes on its own flimsy premise is the ending. A total sell out, you almost want to throw up at the cosy conclusion. The film, the fourth remake, of Jack Finney’s alien invasion tale, tells the story of a world taken over by a virus which attacks when one falls asleep leeching all emotion from them. Kidman plays a psychiatrist Carol Bennell, whose son Oliver goes to spend a weekend with her estranged husband. Carol realises there is something wrong with the world at large and then it is a mad rush to save the son with the help of strictly platonic friend Ben Discroll (Craig).

The film manages to strike a chord of unease in the beginning but then rapidly degenerates into manic car chases and shoot outs with whirring choppers.

In this weekend of remakes, this one does not make the cut either. You would be better off renting any of the earlier versions.
