PUDUCHERRY: Cable television operators in the Union Territory on Saturday urged the Government to emulate Tamil Nadu in protecting the interests of service providers and subscribers. In a memorandum submitted to Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, president of the Pondicherry Cable T.V. Owners’ Association A. M. Saleem and secretary R. Devakumar said the cable TV operators had been serving the people by introducing new technologies during the past 15 years. In Puducherry and Karaikal alone, around 500 cable TV operators and over 4,000 workers depended on the business in which a huge investment had been made, Mr. Saleem said, adding that the service met an essential requirement of the people. Referring to the recent formation of the Tamil Nadu Government Cable Television Corporation, he said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had made it clear that the cable television service would be provided to the subscribers through the existing operators. It had also been announced that the corporation would function as a multi-system operator, he pointed out. If the Puducherry Government came forward to set up its own MSO and extend the cable television service through the present operators, the association would extend cooperation, Mr. Devakumar said. Mr. Saleem pleaded with the Government to set up a high-level committee comprising officials and experienced cable TV operators to evolve guidelines.
