MANGALORE: A group of people reportedly snatched bundles of “Karavali Ale”, an eveninger, and set them on fire as they were being unloaded at B.C. Road bus station for distribution to local news agents in and around the Bantwal on Saturday morning. The miscreants threw a few bundles of the newspaper into the nearby drain. As a result, copies of the newspapers failed to reach the various news stands in Bantwal taluk. Bantwal Town police sub-inspector Nagesh K. confirmed the incident but said the police had not received a complaint from the proprietors of the newspaper or any of the agents in this regard. “The incident took place around 11.30 a.m. as the copies were being unloaded and sorted to be distributed to news agents,” he said. The police officials visited the spot of the incident and took stock of the situation, he said. B.V. Seetharam, Director, Chitra Publications, which brings out the evening newspaper, said he had instructed his local reporter to file a complaint with the jurisdictional police station about the incident. The police said the newspaper office has been given the required security. On the reasons for the incident, Mr. Seetharam said it could be the result of an advertisement published on Saturday of a tabloid with certain allegations about Minister for Fisheries B. Nagaraj Shetty, who is the Bantwal MLA. When contacted, Mr. Shetty, who was away in Shimoga, said he did not have any knowledge about the incident.
