BEL Sports Club beats LRDE

Stephen stars for BEL with a brace

Rail Wheel Factory beats Tilak Memorial FC

BANGALORE: BEL Sports Club earned full points with a 3-1 victory over LRDE in the State Super league football championship at the BDFA Stadium here on Saturday. At half-time, the winner led 2-1.

It was Stephen’s two successive strikes that put BEL on top. Stephen fired the opening salvo for BEL in the 11th minute, which was quickly neutralised by Satish Kumar in the 25th minute for LRDE. Stephen, however, scored another goal off a move down the left flank in the 35th minute.

Changing over with a 2-1 cushion, BEL dominated the proceedings and effectively nailed LRDE when Arvind headed home a cross from Avinash in the 77th minute.

Earlier, in a ‘A’ division match, Rail Wheel Factory defeated Tilak Memorial FC 2-1. After Tilak Memorial shot into an early lead with a goal through Christopher, RWF struck towards the fag end of the tie with Naveen Babu netting the equaliser in the 75th minute. Prakash scored the match-winner in the 80th minute. On Sunday, BEML (Earth Movers) will meet CIL Super league, while in the ‘A’ division, AGORC will play BHEL (EPD).

Stany in lead

The top-seeded G.A. Stany shot into the lead with five points after five rounds in the State under-19 chess championship at the State Youth Centre here on Saturday.

Stany defeated Gagan of Mangalore in the fifth round in 35 moves. The third-seeded P.P. Prachura beat fourth seed Viani Antonio D’Cunha in 32 moves, while the game that went the distance was between Balkishen and Vigram which the former won in 50 moves.

In the girls’ second round, Pavitra Jagtap stunned the top seed and State women’s champion Shruthi of Shimoga in 40 moves. Shruthi lost her way after coming under time pressure. Later in the third round, Pavitra drew with Shristi Shetty. Four players — Pavitra, Shristi, Shruthi and Manasa — shared the lead with 2.5 points apiece after three rounds.
