People walk several km to reach work places

Road connectivity is needed to transport agri-produce

THENI: Efforts are on provide road connectivity to villages in remote corners of the hills in the district. Permission from the Central Government to lay roads through the forests would be obtained as early as possible to resume pending ghat road projects, according to P. Selvendran, Special Representative for Tamil Nadu in New Delhi.

He was addressing a special meeting of representatives of local bodies at the Collectorate here on Saturday. Road connectivity was lacking for many villages on the hills. People were walking several kilometres to reach their work places. But permission from the Forest Department was essential to complete pending ghat road projects. The Central Government would be persuaded to take up the projects, he said. “Road connectivity is needed to transport agri-produce from the villages to the market in towns.”

Transport

Local body representatives must encourage people willing to operate mini buses in rural areas. The district administration should streamline operation of vans to villages, he said.

Har Sahay Meena, District Collector, said that transport facilities would be enhanced in rural areas. More buses would be operated either by Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation or private bus operators. Bus services would be introduced to villages that have good roads. Top priority would be given to develop basic amenities in rural areas.

Later, the Collector gathered details on requirements of new routes, needs for mini buses from representatives of local bodies. Details of overhead tanks and other water storage facilities in villages were also collected to improve drinking water facilities.

The village heads also furnished information about the number of dirt roads that needed to be upgraded as asphalt roads under Prime Minister’s Rural Roads Development scheme.
