Special Correspondent
Thiruvananthapuram: A special squad of the city Corporation raided shops and hotels on Saturday and issued notice to 10 traders for stocking and selling plastic bags and containers below 30 microns. The raid was organised in connection with the plastic ban imposed by the Government from September 1. The Corporation special squad led by Health Inspector P. Mohanakumar inspected shops in the Medical College area. A press note issued by the Corporation said the notice was issued as the first step towards enforcing the ban. It said that other parts of the city would be inspected in the coming days. Warning
Corporation secretary Johnson K. George warned that traders defying the ban would invite stern action including prosecution. Still in use
Meanwhile, shops, eateries and other outlets in the city continued to use disposable carry-bags, plastic cups and containers, in a bid to dispose of the existing stock. Even shops attached to temples were handing out thin plastic covers to devotees purchasing temple offerings.
