Vocalist T.M. Krishna honoured

Kala Kruthi’s contribution to culture hailed

CHENNAI: Kala Kruthi, a cultural organisation in Egmore, honoured vocalist T.M.Krishna with the ‘Kala Kruthi’ award on Saturday.

Kala Kruthi, run by a group of women, has been functioning as the music wing of Kasturbha Nilayam, a branch of the Women’s Indian Association. N. Murali, Managing Director, The Hindu, released a souvenir on the occasion of th e social welfare organisation’s 12th anniversary.

He complimented Kala Kruthi on organising events at Egmore, when most of the cultural activities in the city were concentrated in South Chennai. Commending Mr. Krishna, he said: “He is a complete musician rooted in classicism.” He was into research and other academic pursuits, and also found time for interests such as cricket.

Madras High Court judge Prabha Sridevan, who received the first copy of the souvenir, said art played an important role in the growth of society. She lauded the organisation for involving itself in social as well as cultural activities.

Social worker Sarojini Varadappan, the guest of honour, and Mrs. Y. G. Parthasarathy, dean and director of Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan group of schools, lauded the organising team for its consistent efforts. “Music should be made compulsory in all schools,” Ms. Varadappan said. Speakers hailed the efforts of sabha secretary Rajamma Venugopal. “She has been very persuasive and has managed to get stalwarts to perform in the sabha,” Mrs. Y. G. Parthasarathy said.

Arusuvai Natrajan, renowned caterer and owner of Anantha Bhushanam Kalyana Mandapam, the venue for Kala Kruthi’s programmes, said he was happy to be associated with the sabha.
