Freeze on construction near IAF station soon

Special Correspondent

Function to felicitate those who had helped in the struggle by residents on this issue held

Notification barring constructions within 900 metres to come shortly

TAMBARAM: Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu said on Saturday that a State government notification regarding the freeze on construction within 900 metres of the periphery of the Indian Air Force station would come soon.

(A State Government Order (No. 164) passed in 2002 directed urban and rural local bodies not to issue building permits for construction activity within 900 metres from the periphery of IAF installations.

Recently the Ministry of Defence passed a circular stating restrictions on the distance from IAF peripheries were being eased, bringing immense relief to residents in Tambaram, Peerkankaranai and other villages.)

Mr. Baalu, who is also South Chennai MP, was participating in a function organised by the IAF 900 metres Adjoining Areas Affected People Association.

The function was to thank and felicitate those who had helped in the struggle by residents on this issue.

He said the restrictions within 100 metres had to be maintained for security reasons.

Speakers during the function said that now that the Centre had eased restrictions, it was up to the State government to revoke the GO No. 164.

While leaving, the Union Minister told reporters that a State government notification regarding this would come shortly.

S. R. Raja and M. A. Vaidyalingam, current and former MLA of Tambaram were among those who spoke.
