Merajuddin Patel
Bangalore: Former Minister and MLA from Bidar district Merajuddin N. Patel has been appointed president of the State unit of the Janata Dal (Secular). Pending the announcement of dates for the local body elections by the State Election Commission and transfer of power to Bharatiya Janata Party, the former Prime Minister and president of the Janata Dal (Secular) H.D. Deve Gowda sprang a surprise at a party meeting here on Sunday by announcing that a decision had been taken to appoint Mr. Patel as president of the State unit of the party with immediate effect. Mr. Gowda announced that the party would reorganise its “frontal units” such as the youth wing, women’s wing, minority wing and Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribes wing. The purpose of the political exercise was to instil discipline in the party cadres and prepare them to face the challenges ahead, he said. Addressing a conference of minorities organised by the Bangalore city unit of the party, Mr. Gowda said that the party State unit president and the Minister for Home M.P. Prakash had been pleading with the leadership to relieve him of either one of the posts as he could not concentrate on both. But the party was waiting for an appropriate time to concede Mr. Prakash’s request. “I have now decided to bestow the responsibilities on Mr. Patel with the consent of Mr. Prakash,” Mr. Gowda said.
