VISAKHAPATNAM: The Forest Environment Education centre set up by the previous Telugu Desam Government is gathering dust. Thanks to the indifference of the authorities concerned, it reflects the level of environmental awareness and its implementation at R.K. Beach.

The centre was inaugurated by then Minister for Forests, Environment, Science and Technology Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu in December 2000. The awareness centre has a life-size statue of a tiger with its two cubs playing near it. The one-room centre has been aesthetically designed to give it a vintage look.

Grandiose plans

The tiger is visible to those passing on the beach road. A quick glance at the statue, the portraits and the walls is enough to gauge the fact that the structure has been neglected for long. There are some oil paintings on environmental awareness. The paintings are gathering dust and a stray dog has found shelter at the feet of the tiger!

Vagabonds and urchins are using the precincts of the building for taking shelter from the rain and sun. The Forest Department has grandiose plans to renovate the structure at an estimated cost of about Rs.5 lakhs. “A proposal has been sent to the government for replacement of the iron girders on the roof and construction of a shed on the open space adjacent to the centre. The tiger statue and the portraits will be removed and training-cum-sales counters opened for sale of products made by VSS members,” Forest Conservator P.V. Padmanabhan told The Hindu. The tiger statue would be given its rightful place at Kambalakonda!
