Work being completed in a hurry

Approved plan violated regarding use of concrete

SHIMOGA: The quality of the modernisation work of the Bhadra canal system has come under criticism by former MLAs, Vanal Rajanna of Channagiri constituency and Karianna of Holehonnur (Reserve) constituency, which form part of the Bhadra Command area.

The State General Secretary of the Karnataka Rajya Raith Sangh K.T. Gangadhar has also voiced his criticism.

They told presspersons here on Saturday that the modernisation work was being implemented in violation of the approved plan and without using the right mix of concrete.

Mr. Rajanna said that the poor quality of the work had come to the notice of farmers in the Bhadra command area and leaders of other organisations who were agitated about it.

He said that the laying of concrete without using steel in the main canals, which handled the water flow of nearly 3,000 cusecs, was not safe.

Mr. Karianna said though the work was being taken up at a cost of Rs. 900 crore, sign boards had not been put up anywhere showing the technical details.

He alleged that the work was being completed in an undue haste without giving any attention to the maintenance of its quality.

Mr. Gangadhar warned of launching an agitation by the farmers in the command area if the Government did not ensure the quality of the work.
