Central assistance to 20 high schools

Staff Reporter

GUNTUR: Minister for Ports and Basic Infrastructure M. Venkata Ramana Rao on Sunday asked the Agricultural Department to ensure that there was no scarcity of fertilisers in the ongoing Kharif season. Since the farmers have been asking for a particular brand of Urea and asked the agricultural officers to ensure that there was sufficient supply, he said that general body meeting of the Zilla Parishad held here on Sunday.

The Department of Education has identified 20 high schools in the district to implement a Central Government project, ‘Success School’. Under the project, each school would get Central assistance of Rs.75 lakh. District Educational Officer Movva Ramalingam said on Sunday. The Department of Education has also sent proposals to include nine high schools for girls with strength of over 250 students, he said.

Infrastructure

The amount would be spent for creation of lasting infrastructural facilities in the schools, like modern buildings, play ground, libraries and computer labs, he said.

Replying to the concerns raised by M.L.C. T.G.V Krishna Reddy over the deteriorating standards of education in the government schools, the D.E.O said that performance of the students in Class 10 has shown remarkable performance with 45 securing marks above 550 in the district. They would be soon felicitated at a function to be held at the Z.P. Hall.

The department is taking several measures aimed at improving the standards of teaching. To encourage the students in the upland areas, the department would soon start mid-day meal scheme in schools in 18 upland mandals for students of classes 9 and 10. Zilla Parishad Chairperson Kuchipudi Vijaya said that a donor expressed his willingness to donate ceiling fans in schools and asked the DEO to send proposals.

PHCs

The Z.P.T.Cs and M.P.Ps present at the meeting pointed out that primary health centres in most of the mandals were in bad shape and the duty doctors and nurses were found to be absent. Vinukonda M.L.A Makkena Mallikarjuna Rao said that A.N.Ms were often found to be away from the villages where they were posted causing a lot of hardship to families of weaker sections.
