Uma sent to 14 days’ judicial custody at the end of police custody She purportedly said the girls were arranged by Virender
NEW DELHI: A small-time businessman has been arrested by the Delhi police on charges of arranging girls for Uma Khurana, the mathematics teacher of the Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya who was arrested this past week for allegedly running a prostitution racket. The accused was produced in a Delhi court that remanded him to one-day police custody on Sunday. According to the police, Virender Arora was arrested from his trans-Yamuna residence in the morning following a disclosure by Uma that he had provided the girl who was shown in the sting operation carried out by a Hindi television news channel. During interrogation, Uma purportedly disclosed that almost all the girls who were forced by her into prostitution had been arranged by Virender. On completion of her two days’ remand on Sunday, Uma was produced in a local court that sent her to 14 days’ judicial custody. The police were on Sunday interrogating Virender to learn more about the girls he had allegedly provided to Uma. As it was earlier alleged that the mathematics teacher was exploiting girl students, through Virender the police are trying to find out if any of the girls forced into prostitution allegedly by her was a student of the school. “We are crosschecking from him the revelations made by Uma,” said a police officer. It is learnt that the police have approached one of the victims hoping that she would testify against the accused. Dismissed
On Saturday, the Government had dismissed Uma from service. The decision was taken on the recommendation of a committee led by the Education Secretary that was formed to investigate the allegations against Uma. The committee saw the compact disc of the sting operation that exposed Uma’s alleged involvement in the flesh trade and on that basis recommended termination of her service. Following her arrest, the police had mounted raids at her Yojana Vihar residence and her coaching institute in East Delhi. A TV channel, on Thursday, had aired a sting operation purportedly showing schoolgirls accusing Uma of filming them in a compromising position and then blackmailing them. The area around the school on Asaf Ali Road near Turkman Gate, where Uma had worked, erupted in violence following the airing of the TV channel’s sting operation, with angry parents and local residents going on a rampage. The violence had left over a score injured and two dozen vehicles damaged.
