CLEAN-UP: Mayor M. Subramanian inspects garbage clearance at Vadapalani on Sunday.

Chennai: The Chennai Corporation has set up telephone helplines for residents of the Ice House, Kodambakkam and Adyar zones to report complaints related to garbage clearance.

The numbers to call are: Zone 6 (Ice House) — 94451-90625; Zone 8 (Kodambakkam) — 94451-90626 and Zone 10 (Adyar) — 94451-90627.

About 1,500 tonnes of garbage were cleared from the three zones on Sunday, a release from the Corporation said here.

The last week had proved a tough time for the civic body as it drew flak for its failure to foresee garbage disposal problems when the new waste management contractor Neel Metal Fanalca took over from CES Onyx in the three zones in the city.

About 1,200 tonnes of garbage was cleared on Saturday. Eight superintending engineers, 48 assistant executive engineers and 18 supervisors have been given the work of ensuring quick clearance of garbage in the three zones. About 170 trucks have been put into service to transfer the waste. There are still localities where the garbage clearance is slow, according to the residents, who fear the risk to their health.

Workers from CES Onyx would assist the Corporation till the new firm was ready with manpower and material. Mayor M. Subramanian visited parts of Saligramam, Nesapakkam, Vadapalani, Virugambakkam and Ashok Nagar beginning 5 a.m. on Sunday to ensure waste disposal. Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni and a team of officials also carried out inspection.

The Corporation has requested hotels, wedding halls and lodges to store garbage on their premises and dispose of them when trucks visited the locality.

They may also call the helplines to request a truck to remove the waste.
