Staff Reporter

For crop damage by animals

To be according to the crop type

Solar fencing in reserve forest areas

PERAMBALUR: Compensation will be paid to farmers whose crops are damaged by wild animals, Forests Minister N. Selvaraj has said.

Participating in a function to mark the distribution of free colour television sets and stoves at Neikuppai recently, he said the compensation would be commensurate with the crop type and the extent of damage.

The affected farmers should submit an application to the Forest Department, along with certificates issued by the Revenue Department in support of their claim, Mr. Selvaraj said. The department would also initiate action to check the damage caused by deer in and around Veppanthattai block.

A Centrally-sponsored scheme for setting up solar fence to a cumulative length of 300 km would be launched in the reserve forest areas in the State. In Perambalur district, the Iyyanarpalayam reserve forest area would be covered under a solar fencing programme to a length of about 20 km. The forest areas in about 15 villages, including Iyyanarpalayam, Kariyanur, Pillankulam and Nerkuppai, would be fenced..

District Revenue Officer P. Sankar said 35,000 free television sets had so far been distributed in the district.

Panchayat union councillor Jayanthi Duraikrishna said maize cultivators in and around Veppanthattai block were the worst hit by the deer menace. She sought steps to check the menace, as the crop was damaged a few days ahead of the harvest season.

The Minister distributed identity cards to village panchayat presidents and prizes to winners of competitions held as part of ‘Renewable Energy Day.’

MLAs M. Rajkumar and S. Sivasankar spoke.
