Kerala Minister slams Velu’s remarks

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Vijayakumar, who also holds charge of Railways in the Kerala Cabinet, has taken exception to Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu’s statement that the inauguration of the Salem Railway Division will take place on September 14 as announced earlier.

Mr. Vijayakumar told a news conference here on Sunday that there was no need to take Mr. Velu’s statements at face value, as he was not observing the basic decorum expected of a Union Minister. “Is he the Minister of just one State or of the entire country?”

He pointed out that Kerala had been assured by both the Prime Minister and the Union Railway Minister that its concerns over the status of the Palakkad division would be addressed before the Salem division was inaugurated. It appeared that the Centre was being controlled by Ministers from Tamil Nadu, he said.
