KOLKATA: The question whether the United Progressive Alliance government faces a crisis or not “is up to the government,” Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Sitaram Yechury said here on Sunday. The understanding was that the nuclear deal with the United States should not be operationalised till the proposed committee to look into Left parties’ concerns came with its conclusions, he pointed out. IAEA negotiations
On the question of negotiations with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), he said talks related to India-specific safeguards should not be held at the Vienna meeting of the IAEA. “If it is not, there is no crisis, if it is, there could be a crisis. It is now up to the government,” he said while speaking to newspersons after calling on veteran Marxist leader, Jyoti Basu. He was accompanied by Biman Bose, secretary of the party’s State committee. Mr. Yechury and Mr. Bose were understood to have reviewed with Mr. Basu the developments the UPA government’s decision to set up a committee on the nuclear deal. On August 31, CPI(M) general secretary called on Mr. Basu and discussed issues concerning the nuclear deal. “Statements indiscrete”
New Delhi Special Correspondent reports Terming the recent statements on the India-U.S. nuclear deal by United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as “indiscrete”, senior Communist Party of India leader Gurudas Dasgupta told a press conference on Sunday that the intention behind such “superficial” comments was to win public support for the deal. The clean chit given by Ms. Gandhi to Dr. Singh was “unreasonable”, Mr. Dasgupta said. PTI reports: The composition of the committee to allay Left concerns over the deal is likely to be announced on Monday. Highly-placed sources said besides leaders of the Left parties, it is likely to be headed by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, and comprise leaders of the Congress and other UPA parties.
