BANGALORE: Communist Party of India (CPI) MP Sudhakar Reddy on Sunday visited Nandagudi hobli in Hoskote taluk, where the Government has permitted the setting up of a Special Economic Zone by a private company, Skil Infrastructure.

Addressing a public meeting, Mr. Reddy said that the Government had taken a wrong decision by allowing the SEZ to come up there. It should reconsider its decision as hundreds of people would be affected, he said.

The country’s economic growth did not have to be through the medium of SEZs as they harmed the general interest of the nation and encouraged the growth of land mafia, Mr. Reddy said.

Ironical

Siddangouda Patil, state secretary of the CPI, said that it was ironical that the Government would give hundreds of acres to a private company while at the same time stating that it did not have land to distribute among landless farmers.

The CPI plans to hold processions in villages where land is being acquired as a means to pressure the Government to drop plans to create the SEZ. Nearly 12,350 acres is likely to be acquired in 36 villages in Nandagudi hobli, 50 km from Bangalore city, and is one of the largest SEZ projects implemented in the State.
