DMK demands due recognition in Pondy
Special Correspondent
PUDUCHERRY: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), an ally of the Congress in the Union Territory, on Monday asked the Government to accord due recognition to the party while implementing various welfare schemes.
A delegation of the DMK, led by convener of the party in the Union Territory R.V. Janakiraman and Opposition Leader A.M.H. Nazeem, called on Chief Minister N. Rangasamy at his office and briefed him on the party’s views. Shortly after the meeting, a DMK spokesman said that the DMK leaders and legislators had asked the Chief Minister to restore the free rice scheme for all persons having red or yellow ration cards. The suspension of the scheme by the Government had come in for criticism from different sections, they said.
Waiver of farm loan
The DMK also wanted steps taken to implement its assurances such as waiver of cooperative farm loan.
Failure on the part of the Government to write off the loan arrears had created a lot of resentment among the agriculturists, they said. The DMK leaders asked the Chief Minister to take steps to modernise the textile mills.
They also reiterated their demand to appoint DMK men as chairpersons of some of the boards, the spokesman said.
