Ponmudy distributes over 3,600 free colour televisions

VILLUPURAM: Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy gave away 3,684 free colour television sets and 50 gas stoves with LPG connections to the beneficiaries at a function held at Marakkanam near here on Saturday.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said all ration-card holders who did not possess colour TVs would be covered under the scheme. Tamil Nadu was the only State that had launched a slew of unique welfare schemes for the uplift of the poor and downtrodden.
Cataloguing the schemes, he cited the instance of Rs 2-a-kg rice, marriage assistance of Rs 15,000, financial support during pregnancy and so on. He noted that thanks to the initiative taken by Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi, Tamil Nadu had become the attractive destination for setting up industries. The prospective industries would invest as much as Rs.12,000 crore in the State that in turn would amply improve the employment opportunities.
District Collector Brajendra Navnit said so far 80,000 colour TVs and 17,025 gas stoves had been distributed in the district.
After the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Scheme had come into vogue, the lots of the villagers had improved a great deal, because it aimed at providing urban amenities in rural areas. The Collector said welfare assistance to the tune of Rs 1.60 crore was given to 3,981 beneficiaries.
