Corrections and clarifications

The third paragraph in a report “[Indian Ambassador to the United States Ronen] Sen may be called before House panel” (September 3, 2007) was: “The headed is headed by Congress Member of Parliament V. Kisho rechandra Suryanarayan Deo.” It should have been “The [Lok Sabha Priviledges] committee is headed ….”

A seventh paragraph in “Yechury: it is up to the government” (September 3, 2007) was: “Terming the recent statements on the India-U.S. nuclear deal by United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as ‘indiscrete’, senior Communist Party of India leader Gurudas Dasgupta told a press conference on Sunday that the intention behind such ‘superficial’ comments was to win public support for the dea l.” “Indiscrete” should have been “indiscreet”.

The second paragraph in a report “India can play a key role in resolving crisis: Rajapaksa” was: “In an interview to Hard Talk magazine published from here [New Delhi], Mr. Rajapaksa also gave his views on the India-Sri Lanka Peace Accord, which he indicated, was unable to fulfil most of the objectives it had set out to accomplish.” It was an error. The reference should have been to the Hardnews magazine. The interview goes under the heading “Tamil people are in LTTE’s bondage” (September 2007), where the President of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa, has talked to Hardnews Colombo Bureau Chief Bandula Jayasekara. (Hardnews is the South Asian partn er of the French monthly Le Monde Diplomatique.)

A key sentence was jumbled in a report “Violence near Godhra” (September 1, 2007, page 1). The second paragraph “The police said the trouble began with a quarrel between two groups of Sindhi and sharing of seats”, should have been “The police said the trouble began with a quarrel between two groups of Sindhi and Muslim students of the local S.J. Dave High School over sharing of seats.”

The seventh paragraph “About eight people, including three police men, sus S.J. Dave High School over tained injuries in the stone throwing and police arrested about 25 people”, should have been “About eight people, including three police men, sustained injuries in the stone throwing and police arrested about 25 people”

The errors were rectified in the later editions.
