All dressed up: Children dressed as Lord Krishna and Radha at the celebrations.
TIRUCHI: ‘Catch them young’ is the watchword of institutions organising competitions for school students. The daylong competitions conducted as part of Sri Krishna Jayanthi celebrations, organised by the Swadharma Janasakthi in the city on Sunday, provided ample opportunities to about 280 students of 23 schools in and around Tiruchi to exhibit their talent in various fields. The contests were meticulously planned to suit the religious ambience that Sri Jayanthi signifies. For instance, a special fancy dress competition, exclusively to depict Lord Krishna, was meant for students of Standard I to VIII. As many as 65 students, who participated in the contest and dressed as Lord Krishna, enthralled the audience. A group dance — mostly with ‘kolattam’ — presented by students from a few schools reminded the audience of the Gokulam. Yet another important event was individual talent test, in which students displayed their talent in music, vocal, story-telling and Bharathanatyam. A challenging contest was for a batch of 85 students of IX and X standards who were intently involved in a painting competition. Each of them was given a portrait of Lord Krishna and were asked to draw it. “The quiz programme was aimed at promoting pupils’ interest for gaining not only religious knowledge but national spirit,” says the founder of the Swadharma Janasakthi, A.S. Kannan.
