CHENNAI: A three-day international seminar titled ‘Bharathi-125’ will be organised in Puducherry from September 21 to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of the renowned Tamil poet Subramaniya Bharathi. Hosted jointly by Vanavil Cultural Centre and the Subramaniya Bharathi School of Tamil at Pondicherry University, the seminar will discuss various topics such as Bharathi’s literary works, and the poet as a social reformer. Tamil scholar Avvai Natarajan said the first such international seminar on the illustrious poet will have about 200 delegates participating from various States, including Karnataka and West Bengal, and countries such as Singapore, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. Two compilations of Bharathi’s essays will be released on the occasion. Moreover, a tribute by poets at the Bharathi memorial in Puducherry and a quiz contest for students will also be conducted, Mr. Natarajan said. Toppers of an essay contest on Bharathi will be presented prizes on the occasion. MP and agricultural scientist M.S. Swaminathan, former vice-chancellor of Pondicherry University V.C. Kulandisamy, and Tamil scholar Solomon Pappiah are expected to participate in the inaugural ceremony.
