Water supply

The corporation was supplying drinking water on a daily basis. This was made on ‘alternate’ days when the monsoon failed once, a few years back and the level in the Vaigai dam went low. Since there is comfortable storage of water in Periyar and Vaigai dams now, the corporation should revive the earlier system to free the city from water problem and ensure tax-payers get uninterrupted supply of drinking water.

EB office

An Electricty Board Office was functioning at Keelaiyur near Melur taluk, serving 15 villages. It has been shifted to Thaniyamanglaam. Residents of these villages find it inconvenient to travel a long distance to the new office to pay electricity bill and make enquiry about service connection. Hence, we request the Collector to look into the matter and shift the office back to Keelaiyur.

SB account

It is learnt that the Central Government plans to keep tabs on the amount of money kept in savings bank accounts in banks. If such a practice comes into force, it will discourage people from saving money in banks. They will be forced to deposit money with illegal elements who promise more interest. The scope for security of money is less. Generally public are accustomed to deposit money in savings account to meet unforeseen expenses. They never keep track of accumulation of money in their account.

The Government must drop the move and encourage practice of thrift.

Tamil also deserves and generates such an interest. The apt location for establishing the Central Institute of Classical Tamil is Madurai.

All India Radio, Madurai, broadcasts advertisements of an unheard of finance company. They boast themselves of giving loans to loss-making concerns, for repairing houses etc. They are not telling the terms and conditions and collateral they demand from the borrowers. By entertaining such advertisements, All India Radio is unwittingly giving some sort of credibility to the company. For such advertisements, the AIR must verify veracity from the authorities and financial regulators before broadcasting them. The AIR should not think solely in terms of revenue and check bonafides of such companies that mislead people.

Free left turn

School-going children, sick people and the aged find it difficult to cross Alagarkovil Road near Thevar statue, since vehicles coming from Palam Station Road towards Tamukkam pose a threat, because of the free left turn allowed there. If the free left turn is not allowed, pedestrians will find it safe to cross the road, instead of getting stranded in the middle, as witnessed now.

Protect monument

Thirumalai Naick Palace, despite being a popular spot on the tourist circuit, has become an eyesore what with garbage strewn around, flies and mosquitoes. The Tourism Department must take some serious efforts to protect the spectacular monument.
